WordPress 101 Guide: Basic Setup

Now that you have WordPress installed, I suggest you log into your site and go through some basic setup steps. Most of the default settings are fine, but I suggest some edits before you run off posting content.

Typing “/wp-admin” after your domain name will take you to your WordPress login screen.

Change your Nickname and Password

  • Select “Users” on the left side menu
  • Hover over “admin” and click the “Edit” link
  • Edit your “Nickname” so that posts show as written by “yourname” instead of “admin”
  • Feel free to change your password if you have a hard to remember randomly generated one
  • Click the “Update Profile” button to save the changes

General Settings

  • Select “Settings” on the left side menu
  • Now you can fill in your website information if it’s not already filled in
  • Click “Save Changes”

Permalinks

  • Under “Settings” click on the “Permalinks” menu item
  • Here you can choose how the links to your posts will display
  • “Day and Name” is great for displaying the date and post name, otherwise I would choose “Post name”
  • Click “Save Changes”

That’s really all you need to get started. There are lots of other controls and options to tinker with and WordPress.org documents the details, so you can utilize them when you need it.
